Q&A: Non-chemical tick prevention for allergic dog?
Question by Bordeaux: Non-chemical tick prevention for allergic dog?
Hi there!
I have a dog with environmental allergies who has to take Temaril-P occasionally to control the horrible itching and hair loss he gets sometimes. I only had him since December, so this is his first “flea season” here in New England. Although he does not any fleas since he’s been with us, I recently began to pick some ticks out of him after we go for walks in the woods.
I am extremely worried that he will become infested with ticks and fleas, which cannot be good for his allergies. On the other hand, I am afraid of using topical chemicals because I think they may do as much harm to a sensitive dog as the parasites. His vet prescribed Revolution because it’s supposed to be less harsh to the dog, but I read several reviews saying that this drug is not really as effective for ticks as it is for fleas. Well, my dog doesn’t even have fleas! Besides, if I go with it, I’m going to waste a year supply of heartworm pills I bought earlier because Revolution is also for the prevention of heartworms.
Does anyone here have a good tick preventative that is not likely to flare up my dog’s allergies and that will also prevent fleas?
Thanks for your help!
