Your Feelings on Male Hair Loss

October 31st, 2008

by Raj Pandey

Its normal to feel the way you do about hair loss. Men experience feelings of anxiety, depression, and unattractiveness when they realize that theyre losing their hair. Its not healthy to have self-pity party for one. Instead you need to grasp your feelings on the situation and make a proactive decision. If your hair loss has not been gradual, but instead very sudden, you should schedule an appointment with a family physician. A doctor will be able to describe the reason for your hair loss and suggest possible treatments to remedy the balding.

Every man experiences some form of hair loss. As a matter of fact, its completely normal for a man to shed up to 100 hairs in a single day. Hair loss can occur for many different reasons. While some men experience hair loss because of stress, injury, sickness, and/or disease, others lose hair at an early age due to inheritance (Dont get angry at your folks!)

You may feel confused and vulnerable to over the counter remedies that promise fabulous results. Be wary of these advertisements. If something sounds too good to be true, it usually is. These products can aggravate the condition; or worse-have side effects that will require additional treatment. As mentioned earlier, a proactive decision is necessary in terms of dealing with hair loss.

Fortunately, you live in a society where bald men are not only accepted, but embraced! Take a look around. Clean-shaved heads can be found as far as the eye can see. Print advertisements, commercials, movies, and music videos all include men that proudly flaunt their bald heads. In 2006, bald means beautiful for men of all ages and backgrounds.

Before you can fully understand the feelings you may have about your condition, you need to discover the cause of your hair loss. Perhaps your hair loss is only temporary. Maybe its a sign of something more serious. Whatever the cause-if its something that happened quite suddenly; it should be checked out. Other reasons to call a physician immediately, include:

* Rash or redness of scalp which accompanies a large amount of shedding when brushing/combing hair.

* Pain and/or tenderness to the scalp along with hair loss.

* Red circles/marks, abrasions in the area that is balding.

* Fever of 100?? (37.8??) accompanied by hair loss with no known cause.

Patients that opt for treatment need to be pragmatic and realistic. Use of pills, shots, lotions, and shampoos will have different results for everyone. If you choose to accept your hair the way it is, than more power to you! There are a number of hairstyling techniques that may help you cover a bald spot.

Nevertheless, your health always comes first. Remember, men with thinning hair and or bald heads have a higher risk of sunburn and skin cancer. If youre heading outdoors for a soak in the sun, dont forget to wear a hat or lather up with sunscreen.

The hair care industry is a billion dollar industry. ??A perm, relaxer or color ranges in price from $65 to over $100 and most women get their hair retouched every 2-3 months. That??s a lot of money spent per year!

The models that grace the pages of magazines and on television commercials shaking their heads to show off their fabulous locks is one of the major reasons that the industry is doing so well. Women want to look their best and will find any means to do so. Why wouldn??t anyone want to look fabulous! We see our favorite celebrities do it so why not us.

However, there is one area of the hair industry that is not publicized as much, and that is hair loss in women, which has become very common in many women. This can be an incredibly devastating experience for many women. The loss of hair can lead to feelings of embarrassment and shame.
A three-year study of women suffering from loss of hair in the late 1990??s had identified iron deficiency as the cause of hair loss in 72% of pre-menopausal women.
This loss of iron could lead to anemia. But women should not wait for their doctor to diagnose them with having anemia (defined as too little iron in the blood). They should focus on maintaining a healthy diet.
Here are some recommendations:
Try to get your recommended daily iron intake. Some women with iron deficiency have experienced many strands and sometimes handfuls of hair going down the drain when washing their hair and they were not pregnant (note: pregnancy can sometimes cause premature loss of hair).
So, your best bet is to avoid these nightmarish experiences and increase your iron intake on a daily basis. Make sure your diet contains enough meat, fish, eggs, cereals, peas and beans. Try eating more dried fruits, legumes and dark leafy greens, which are very high in iron content.
If you are experiencing hair loss, contact your doctor immediately. If you are taking any medications your doctor should be able to determine if this may be the cause. There are many factors which can cause hair loss ?C iron deficiency is only one of them.

Women: You are beautiful despite your hair loss!

When a man begins to lose his hair, it is the cause of jokes amongst friends as well as an increase in hat purchases. As embarrassing as it may be for an individual, male hair loss is a very socially accepted condition. When a woman starts to notice thinning hair, it is another matter entirely. There are no sitcom jokes about a balding woman character, there are no bumper stickers aimed at females with hair loss, and there are no commercials telling women that there are options and that youre not alone. Our culture is simply silent on the subject.

The fact is, however, that there are over 30 million women with thinning hair. Thats one out of every five females. But none of them are prepared for it. It comes as a complete shock due to the lack of information on the subject.

Female hair loss, like its male counterpart, is largely caused by genetics. If there is a history of hair loss in your mother, grandmothers, and aunts you may be susceptible to hair loss yourself. Other causes include heavy stress and illness as well as diets and medication.

If youre a woman in the 20% suffering from hair loss, the first thing to do is stop panicking. Stop stressing out. It only makes it worse. Your hair doesnt own you. Dont let it. Your friends will still be your friends. You wont lose your job. And the men who date you will actually be interested in you and not just your appearance.

So youre working on your attitude. Youre learning to live with it. But that doesnt mean you have to just accept it. There are options out there to help you fight back.

Rogaine is the most popular treatment for balding men. There is also a Rogaine available for women. Itll cost you under $50 a month and has been clinically proven to help reduce hair loss. If you stick with it you just might see your hair loss slow down and, in some cases, even revert.

Propecia is another medication that is FDA approved to treat hair loss. It requires a prescription, however, so make an appointment with your doctor soon.

You can also look into wigs as a way to hide your thinning hair. Obviously this doesnt fix the problem, but it will make your life much more bearable. A good wig can be expensive, so it is up to you to decide how important it is.

By far the most important thing to remember, however, is that you are as beautiful as you ever were. In a culture that forces women to fit a mold, you may feel outcast. Dont let it change your life. You will find true people who will support you. You will find a man who will see past your thinning hair. Dont lose hope. And remember there are 30 million other women going through the same thing!
